Coco, Cholewa score for Rangers

Senior Dominic Coco scored in the first half and Nick Cholewa netted what proved to be the game-winner in the second half as Spencerport defeated Penfield 2-1 in boys soccer.

At 34:37, Coco took a through pass from Lou Petrella following a long punt from goalkeeper Brendan Kazmierski and converted to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead at the half.

Early in the second half, Penfield pressured the Rangers' net, but Kazmierski made a diving stop. Then, in the 52nd minute, Doug Potter found Cholewa who put the ball into the upper right corner for a 2-0 Spencerport lead.

In the 55th and again in the 74th minute, the Rangers had opportunities to add to their lead, but shot the ball over the crossbar.

With just over six minutes remaining, Penfield broke up the shutout bid and closed to within one on a goal from Alex Palmer. The Patriots then hit the post twice over the final two minutes but Spencerport hung on for the win.

"We could easily be 8-0, but we can't score," said Spencerport head coach Tom Etsler. "We need to improve our composure and communication - simple things. We're not young, but we're inexperienced ... things will come around."

The Rangers improved to 4-3-1 with the victory.
