in the Apple Derby

Seventy-five competitors challenged the 29th annual Apple Derby 5 mile run on September 2. For the first time since 1991, two locals finished as the top runners. Michael Cocquyt (29.24) crossed the finish line as the overall male winner and Patricia Pirnie (35:11) was the first female finisher and 14th overall runner to complete the 5 mile course.

Sixteen years ago, local past champions Dave Tresohlavy and Chery Griggs accomplished this feat. Second place competitor Kevin Sheehan (29:49) and Michelle Fee (43:17) were crowned Master Champions; Daniel Giblin (31:11), Michael Sanger (31:15) and Jeffrey Ouriel (31:24) were the top five finishers.

The Hilton-Parma Recreation Department thanked Hilton Big M for financing the $500 record-breaking challenge and the Greater Rochester Association of Realtors that sponsored the 29th annual event.

The top finishers in each age category were : male 10 to 18 - Ross Pirnie 37:16; female 10 to 18 - Alyssa Kirkpatrick 53:20; male 19 to 29 - Michael Sanger 31:15, Scott Mason 36:29; female 19-29 - Jamie Melos 40:16, Meghan Cosgrove 42:07; male 30 to 39 - Jeffrey Ouriel 31:24, Gregory Nowakowski 31:33; female 30 to 39 - Christine Aguglia 39:23, Joanne Laudisi 42:13; male 40 to 49 - Daniel Giblin 31:11, Alan Pogroszewski 31:44; female 40 to 49 - Jan Saxton 47:40, Lisa Malek-Renfer 48:46; male 50 to 59 - Mark Barry 35:09, Donald Schuster 38:21; female 60 to 69 - Mitzie Lewandowski 45:43, Lois Hotchkiss 45:53; male 70 to 79 - Richard Havens 1:04.48.
