531 extension to be complete by year's end
The idea of extending a portion of Route 531 has been a project in the talking phase for more than two dozen years, but now staff from the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) and consulting firms will be performing the field work necessary to move the project forward. more

Lakeside Memorial receives Stroke Center designation
Lakeside Memorial Hospital has received designation as a Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health. The certification is given to hospitals that meet the operational recommendations established by the National Stroke Association. Rigorous training and education must be completed in order to receive the designation. more

Legislators visit Lakeside
Lakeside Health System board members and senior leadership representatives hosted a luncheon for local representatives. In attendance were Senator George D. Maziarz, Assemblyman Steve Hawley, Assemblyman William D. Reilich and Paul Cole, district director representing Congressman Thomas M. Reynolds. more

Life Solutions hosts fundraising event
Life Solutions will host a fundraiser as a way to gather money toward the eventual construction of a new facility for its food pantry. Formerly known as the Bread and Thread, Life Solutions served more than 25,000 meals to those in need in the Hamlin-Clarkson area, Retha Tyo, committee member for the building project said. more

Local woman places in Erie Canalway photo contest
The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor announced the winners of its 2007 Photo Contest. The 12 winning photographs and 12 honorable mention photographers will be included in the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor 2008 Calendar. more

Many sneakers find their way to Churchville collection
A used sneaker collection, held in September by the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Churchville, had some great results and some unexpected ones, too, organizers said. Cheryl Valvano co-chaired the community service project that collected old sneakers for recycling. more

Persistent dry weather forces earlier closing date for Erie Canal
The Canal Corporation reported that the projected closing date on the New York State Canal System to recreational traffic is Thursday, November 1 and to commercial traffic Wednesday, November 7, a week ahead of the originally scheduled closing date of Thursday, November 15. more

Riga recognizes scouts
Members of the Riga Town Board recognized local Girl and Boy Scouts who attended a Columbus Day tour of the Mill Seat Landfill. During their October 9 meeting, council members passed a resolution forwarded by Council Member David Smith honoring the scouts who, "gathered at the Mill Seat Landfill in Riga and learned about refuse, recycling, green energy and generation of electricity with methane gas produced by the landfill." more

Roberts Wesleyan College hosting fundraising event
On Saturday, October 20, Roberts Wesleyan College will host a "Laps of Love" fundraising event in support of former student athlete, Matt St. James. Last March, he collapsed while running at the outdoor track at the college and suffered a brain injury. more

Top honors awarded to Hilton-Parma Recreation
Out of more than 6,500 recreation departments across the country, only 73 of them are accredited and now the Hilton-Parma Recreation Department can count themselves among those that are. more

Wind tower topic reviewed, no new views shared
Town of Hamlin Supervisor Dennis Roach opened the public forum portion of the October 9 town board meeting by asking for anyone who hadn't spoken about wind towers to speak first. No one spoke. more

Adopt-a-Trail volunteers
The Adopt-a-Trail program for the Town of Sweden completed its sixth season on September 29 with an end-of-season sweep of the Erie Canal towpath in the town. The volunteers do litter control and light maintenance of the trail. more

A lighting district will be discussed for Lake Breeze Estates at a meeting at 7:30 p.m. on October 17. more

Pets are blessed
Ogden Presbyterian Church held its first Pet Blessing ceremony on Sunday, September 30. Rev. Sudi Layraman (left) blessed 45 pets with many community and church members in attendance. more

Trimmer Road landfill remediated
For years, the Trimmer Road Landfill site has been inactive, but town officials were still hoping for some sort of closure from the state and it has finally come. more

Churchville-Chili plans public forums on capital project
The Churchville-Chili Central School District seeks input as it plans Phase II of the capital project. There are two public forums scheduled so residents can share ideas on the project with the district's K-12 Organizational Task Force. more

Clarendon residents teach
local history to Holley fourth graders

Holley fourth graders left their modern classroom and headed to Clarendon's one-room schoolhouse to learn about local history from Supervisor Richard Moy. The activities included a tour of the farm museum, which features many pieces of equipment and items used by Clarendon's early residents. more

Hilton School District residents invited
to speak with the superintendent of schools

All interested Hilton School District residents are invited to attend one of two Community Forums called by Hilton Superintendent of Schools David Dimbleby. "The forums have an open format. Questions, suggestions and concerns are encouraged," he said. Dimbleby has been superintendent in Hilton since 2005. more

School program planned to vote for a New York state butterfly
Assemblywomen Susan John (131st District) has planned a butterfly contest to involve third, fourth and fifth graders in a statewide vote to determine the New York State Butterfly. John invited school principals to have their students participate in this unique opportunity. more

Spencerport board chooses interim superintendent
At its October 9 meeting, the Spencerport Board of Education announced it will hire retired former Superintendent of Schools Phillip W. Langton as interim superintendent on the retirement of Mary Anne Kermis. In September, Kermis informed the board of plans to retire in December. Kermis succeeded Langton when he retired in 2005. more

Bees remain undefeated
Three-time defending New York State champion Byron-Bergen improved its record to 13-0 this season with a 25-14, 25-12, 25-17 girl's volleyball sweep over visiting Oakfield-Alabama. This comes after losing six seniors from last year's championship squad. more

Myers four wins leads Saints
Junior Erika Myers finished first in two individual events and added two more as part of first place relay teams as Churchville-Chili defeated Spencerport 97-83 in girl's swimming. more

Rangers in scoreless tie
For 11 seniors, it would be their final regular season game at home as Spencerport battled Webster-Schroeder to a 0-0 tie after 100 minutes of play in girl's varsity soccer. more

Spencerport varsity hockey coach chosen
Spencerport Central School named Craig Charron as the Rangers new varsity hockey coach. Charron is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts - Lowell where he played Division I Hockey. more
