Local woman places in Erie Canalway photo contest

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor announced the winners of its 2007 Photo Contest. The 12 winning photographs and 12 honorable mention photographers will be included in the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor 2008 Calendar. Winning photos and can be viewed at: www.eriecanalway.org. Locally, Kathy Eichorn of Spencerport had one of the winning photos.

"If it hadn't been for the notice in the Suburban News announcing that the deadline has been extended for the Erie Canalway calendar photo contest, I wouldn't have known about the calendar or the contest," Eichorn wrote in an e-mail. "I submitted a photo of the canal near the Martha Street Bridge and it won third place in the Seasons Category. The photo will be in their 2008 calendar and I learned recently that they have selected the photo for the cover. Very exciting."

The photo contest drew nearly 100 entrants and a total of 288 photographs. A panel of judges selected winning photographs based on creativity, photographic quality and effectiveness in conveying the beauty or character of the Erie Canalway in one of four contest categories: History & Heritage, People on the Canal, Heritage Festivals & Events, and Seasons on the Canal.

The National Park Service, which oversees the National Heritage Corridor, will print 4,000 free calendars to be distributed later this fall throughout upstate New York. Locations where the calendars will be made available to the public will be posted at: www.eriecanalway.org.
