Locals to perform in RPO Youth Orchestra

The Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will present the principal flute of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Rebecca Gilbert, in its opening concert of its 2007-2008 season at the Performance Hall at Hochstein. The RPYO, conducted by Music Director David Harman, will perform the great Fifth Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich. Also on the program is an overture by Brahms, the Academic Festival Overture, that incorporates popular German university songs as well as a suites the French composer Bizet created from his opera Carmen.

The Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra was established in 1970 to offer the area's finest young musicians an opportunity to perform the world's great symphonic music. Its program is sponsored by the Education Department of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. One hundred middle and high school students from thirty schools perform in the RPYO. Students from this area are: Cody Halquist, Mariah Holt, Gabrielle Monachino and J.J. Pereira from Brockport High School; Michael Sabatka and Lydia Shewan from Churchville-Chili Sr. High School; Rebecca Copek from Hilton High School and Laura Pillman from Greece Athena High School.
