Hilton powers past McQuaid to advance

Hilton Cadet football under Head Coach Rich Lipani has always been about running the ball. Friday night (October 12) at McQuaid, was no exception as the Cadets used a grind it out attack with a perfect mix of controlled passing to upset Section V Class AA - #3 seed McQuaid by the score of 28-9.

Senior running back Bret Clark scored three touchdowns on 39 carries for 165 yards and two receptions for 29 yards. Opening the way for Clark were left tackle Peter Behnke, left guard Nick Fillion, center Justin Beehler, right guard Tim O'Toole and right tackle Greg Earnhart.

The 39 carries were a season high for Clark who now has 978 rushing yards for the Cadets in 7 games. Clark's season totals are a real statement to the excellent play of his offensive line.

Mixed in with Clark's 39 carries was an array of precise passes by sophomore Quarterback Duell Smith. Tight end, senior Joe Pechie caught a 50-yard pass on Hilton's first possession. Wide outs James Moss, Nick Pappas and Jeff Stanton all contributed drive sustaining catches throughout the game.

The defense, led by Jordan Lenhart, John Veleri, Matt Schickler, Joe Barbaro and the rest of the Cadets held the Knights to one offensive touchdown. Schickler provided the "hit of the game," a bone-jarring sack of McQuaid Quarterback Kent Kozar on a third and 8 in the 4th quarter forcing a punt and the game clinching 29-yard touchdown run by Clark. Two interceptions by cornerback Nick Pappas stopped McQuaid drives in the second half. Hilton shut down junior running back Tomarris Bell and held McQuaid to its lowest offensive output of the season. Hilton advances to the Section V Class AA semi-finals vs. Canandaigua on October 19 at Paetec Park.
