Prep begins at Spencerport fire station site

Work began last week to prepare the site for construction of Spencerport Fire Station 1 on Lyell Avenue. Fire District Commissioner Chairperson Tom Friedo said two buildings will be demolished and concrete and black top removed to make ready for construction of the firehouse. The area will be cleared and crushed stone leveled in preparation for building construction.

The work is expected to continue through the month of November.

Commissioners expect to have specifications ready before the holidays and want to receive bids soon after the start of the new year if all goes as expected.

Voters approved the project in December 2006 but bids came in higher than anticipated requiring a second vote to approve the supplemental amount. The board has cutback on the original plans to reduce the $1 million shortfall, Friedo said.

District residents will be asked to approve the additional amount needed to construct the fire station.
