Holley scrambling for funds because of cuts

The Village of Holley spent a little more than $13,000 for an engineering study on the old high school building. The money was spent in anticipation of the receipt of a $15,000 state aid grant. Holley's funding was cut - as was the funding for many other projects across the state - by Governor Eliot Spitzer.

"We weren't the only ones hit with this, the governor called back a lot of the grants that were promised," Holley's Deputy Mayor Ross Gaylord said. "We had already paid for the study and were expecting to be reimbursed - we wouldn't have spent the money otherwise."

Assemblyman Steven Hawley (134th District) wrote in a press release that, "If his (Spitzer's) intentions are finalized, the Village of Holley will lose $15,000 in funding for an engineering study for the old high school ... This money is not Governor Spitzer's or mine, it is the taxpayers money being recycled back into our communities."

Gaylord said village officials are hoping the money will come back but in the meantime they will be looking for ways to pay for the study that has already been completed.
