Blue Devils advance with late rally

Trailing two-games-to-one and by four points in the fourth game, Brockport scored the final six points to take the fourth game and came from behind to win the fifth and defeat McQuaid in quarterfinal action in the Section Five boy's volleyball tournament.

The Blue Devils never trailed in the first game with senior Doug Neva picking up five kills in a 25-18 win. McQuaid evened the match by a 25-22 score in game two.

Game three featured Brockport leading by four points before allowing the Knights to go on a 13-3 run on their way to a 25-19 victory.

In the pivotal fourth game, McQuaid led by as many as five points before Neva had a block and a kill on consecutive points to give the Blue Devils a chance. Then, trailing 21-19, the five seniors in the starting lineup decided not to let their season end.

Brockport scored six straight points including a crosscourt kill by Ryan Blondell and a kill and a block on the final two points by Cody Groth for the unlikely 25-23 comeback.

In the fifth and deciding game, the score was tied 15 times and went into extra points before Blondell and Groth again registered kills on the final two points for a 28-26 victory to help Brockport advance to play the Fairport-Rush Henrietta winner in the semi-finals.

Neva led the Blue Devils offense with 20 kills to go with four blocks on defense. Blondell picked up 16 kills and led with 19 digs, Groth had 11 kills and Andrew Hueser dished out 50 assists. Tim Hobben also had 16 digs on defense.

Brockport last won boy's volleyball division crowns in 2001 and 2002.
