DEC offers grants to help improve habitat,
expand recreational opportunities

More than $100,000 will be given to local projects across New York state to improve habitat for fish and wildlife, as well as increase public access for outdoor recreation. Funding for the grants will be generated from the sale of DEC's Habitat Access Stamps. more

Firefighters receive animal rescue equipment
Brockport's Fire Chief Timothy Rombaut accepted a new set of oxygen masks that are very different from the one his people are used to. These have been specially designed for animals and were donated by the customers at Country Pet Grooming Salon in Clarkson. more

Food cupboard outreach efforts
know no season, needs increase

Tina Zebulske is one of about ten volunteers in the Hilton-Parma area who work at the Hilton Parma Community Council of Churches’ Food Shelf operating out of Abiding Love Free Methodist Church at the corner of Burritt Road and Route 259. She joined the effort a little over two years ago when the Food Shelf was moved there. more

for Lakeside Family Birthing Center

The Lakeside Memorial Hospital Twig Association continued its tradition of support by holding a baby shower for the Lakeside Family Birthing Center. All Twig members participated by donating hand made and newly purchased baby items. more

Majority of retailers anticipate growth
during 2007 holiday shopping season

More than three-quarters of retailers believe their sales during the upcoming holiday shopping season will be at least as good or better than last year's, a survey of Retail Council of New York State members revealed. more

Matt's Coats for Kids campaign in fourth year
As a way to honor her son, Matthew Fitton, who lost his life in a car accident in August 2003 when he was 20-years-old, his mother and his friends have been running "Matt's Coats for Kids" to collect and distribute coats to children in need. more

Phi Theta Kappa sending holiday donations to soldiers overseas
The Genesee Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is organizing a community-wide drive to collect items to send to troops overseas this holiday season. Anything from baby wipes to books, batteries to beef jerky is on the list of items needed. more

Railroad crossing repairs applauded
Recent work on the Route 36 railroad crossing in the Village of Churchville is complete and village officials say they are very pleased with the results. Members of the village board discussed the repairs during their regular meeting on November 5. more

Sweden presents preliminary budget, tax rate stable
The Sweden Town Board presented its 2008 Preliminary Budget at a public hearing on October 25. The proposed budget leaves the town tax rate at its current level - $4.43 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, two percent below the 2006 town tax rate. more

Symposium focuses on ethics of leadership
"The Ethics of Leadership" were presented at an October 18 symposium by the League of Women Voters at the Seymour Library. more

Twig plans for 'Tree of Lights'
Lakeside Memorial Hospital's Twig Association will sponsor "The Tree Of Lights" during the holiday season. A tree on the front lawn of the hospital will be decorated by donors. more

On Friday, October 26, Riga Recreation held its seventh annual Halloween Pumpkin Hunt & Dance for fifth, sixth and seventh grade students that were residents of the town. The event was held at the William Maher Lodge at the Sanford Road Park Facility. more

The Landing collects coats and toys for outreach projects
The Landing, an assisted living and memory care community in Brockport, will conduct a winter coat drive to benefit Operation Bundle Up. New and next-to-new (in good condition) winter coats will be collected through November 30. Coats will be accepted for all ages. more
