Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon derbies benefit lakeshore counties

The Wayne County Office of Tourism has issued a report and summary of an angler survey conducted with participants in the 2000 Spring Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Trout and Salmon Derby. "This is the eleventh survey our office has conducted to assess the impact of the trout and salmon sportfishery on the counties that border the lake and to chart changing patterns in the development of the fishery," stated Marjory Allen Perez, director of the Office of Tourism.

It is estimated that the 10 day event, held April 28 through May 7, generated $2.6 million in the seven lakeshore counties of Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga, Oswego, and Jefferson. 78 percent of that amount was tourist dollars - money spent in the region by non-resident anglers. The average daily expenditure of non-resident anglers is estimated at $128.

The breakdown of where anglers made their expenditures is as follows: Niagara County - $860,807; Wayne County - $514,025; Oswego County - $370,810; Cayuga County - $333,729; Orleans County - $218,773; Monroe County - $196,898; and Jefferson County - $81,896.
