Brockport M.S. student saves preschooler's life
Receives "Do The Right Thing" Award
Bianca Lynn Rivera, a sixth-grade student at Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School, starts her day earlier than most. She boards the school bus at 5:51 every morning to travel from her home in the City of Rochester to school in Brockport, as part of the urban-suburban transfer program. "Her commitment to school in itself says a lot about her," said Assistant Principal Pat Siconolfi.
But it was more than commitment, it was quick thinking and courage that earned Bianca the "Do The Right Thing" Award recently for saving her four-year-old neighbor from drowning in Bianca's swimming pool.
Bianca was among five students to receive the award, this month, at a ceremony hosted by the Rochester Police Department at the Public Safety Building. A framed certificate, a bag of groceries from TOPS, a one-year family membership to the Memorial Art Gallery, and an Advantix camera from Kodak were just a few of the gifts the students received from the many sponsors of the program.
More than 70 of Bianca's classmates and three teachers were among those attending to support her. "Bianca is very deserving of this award," said her teacher John Jungbluth. "Bianca became a member of the class and community the day she walked into school. I see her as a leader and someone with high ideas who will go far in life."
