One Step Tree and Lawn Care, North Chili, was named one of the top 100 green industry companies in the country by "Landscape Management" magazine. In the publication's September 2000 issue, One Step was recognized as one of the 20 leaders in the Lawn Care Firm category. Companies in the Lawn Care Firm category were chosen based on revenues, influence on industry issues and ability to grow despite adverse weather conditions. One Step was started by Bob Ottley in 1976. The company has 29 year-round employees. "Landscape Management" is published monthly by Advanstar Communications.


Julie Robinson, of Brockport, is studying in Quito, Ecuador during the fall semester through Boston University's Division of International Programs. Robinson is a junior majoring in biology at Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences. A 1998 graduate of Brockport High School, she is the daughter of David and Patty Robinson.


Laura Morgan of Byron, a Certified Nursing Assistant with Lakeside Beikirch Care Center, recently received a Quality Recognition Award. She was chosen to receive the award by her co-workers who cited her for commitment to a job well done. Morgan is noted for always responding to resident call lights, coming in early and staying late when necessary.


Shirley Newbould, a Licensed Practical Nurse, recently received Lakeside Beikirch Care Center's Quality Recognition Award. Her troubleshooting skills, compassion, respect and commitment to providing care to residents in a calm, loving and humorous manner were noted as reasons for her nomination.


Senator George D. Maziarz (R-C, North Tonawanda) was awarded honorary membership in the Marine Corps League at the Conrad F. Kania Detachment's annual awards banquet on Friday, November 10. The ceremonies were held at the American Legion Sikora Post in North Tonawanda. The award was presented to Maziarz for his "exemplary service in the interests of the United States Marine Corps and The Marine Corps League."


Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Chase A. Howland, a 1999 graduate of Spencerport High School, recently graduated from the Nuclear Field School at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Charleston, South Carolina. The course provides hands-on training on equipment designed to teach technical skills. Graduates then attend the Nuclear Power School, which teaches the principles of science and engineering, construction, and operation and maintenance of naval nuclear propulsion plants.
