Blue Devils Hockey wins two
St. Francis of Buffalo scored the first goal four minutes in the game, but it woke the Blue Devils up as they rattled off five unanswered goals enroute to a 5-1 win November 29 at SUNY Brockport.
Senior co-captain Brian Abrams had two goals and an assist and junior Jimmy Baker added a goal and an assist to pace Brockport. Seniors Richard McCubbin and Nick Greene also tallied goals while sophomore Casey Balog, senior co-captain Chad Hage and junior Rich Napierala registered assists.
First year head coach Scott Empey talked about the effort: "We pressured them all over the ice and we never let them get set. We had a penalty killing class a few days ago and it's nice to see a few players blocking some shots. We always talk about discipline so I don't want to be in that situation too often, but they played well tonight."
Three nights later, Brockport faced rival Hilton in a chippy game and skated away with a 6-2 win. The Blue Devils scored first with Baker getting the goal from sophomore Colby Jones and Abrams. Hilton tied the game midway through the first period on the power play with senior captain Ryan Corcoran getting the puck from Ryan Lalonde, stepping around a defenseman in the corner, skating to the circle and firing a shot past Brockport goaltender Nick Unger.
The Blue Devils countered with four straight goals from Napierala, senior Jeff Mrowka, freshman Craig Willis and junior Dan Holding to make it 5-1. Hilton senior Jason Greenwood scored late in the second period from juniors Greg Schwind and Dan Zapf before Abrams capped the scoring in the final five minutes of the game on a breakaway. Greene had a two-point game along with Baker. Senior Sean Curry and freshman Matt Popen also had assists in the win.
Brockport plays Churchville-Chili Wednesday, December 13 and Spencerport Saturday, December 16 at SUNY Brockport. Hilton will face Irondequoit Wednesday, December 13 at Lakeshore and Batavia Saturday, December 16 at Batavia.
