Blue Devils win two in hockey
Senior co-captain Brian Abrams had a hat trick, including two shorthanded, to lead Brockport to an easy 8-2 victory over Spencerport December 16 at SUNY Brockport.
Junior Rich Napierala put the Blue Devils ahead 1-0 in the first period with an assist form eighth grader Andy Simmons before Abrams scored three goals in a row in the second period interrupted by a Brent Warren goal for the Rangers making it 4-1 after two periods. Spencerport sophomore Jeff Poweski scored at the 2:13 mark of the third before the Blue Devils poured it on with four straight goals by senior Chad Hage, sophomore Matt Crawford and two by junior Jimmy Baker.
Junior goaltender Nick Unger continued his solid play in net for Brockport with 25 saves.
On December 18 at SUNY Brockport, the Blue Devils made it two wins in a row with a convincing 4-2 victory over Canisius. Abrams again led the offense with two goals including another shorthanded. Sophomore Casey Balog started the scoring with the only goal on the first period with an assist from Hage. Canisius tied it at 1-1 in the second period on the power play before Brockport countered with a power-play goal from freshman Dan Holding from Baker and sophomore defenseman Colby Jones. Abrams two goals, one in the second and one in the third period, put the game away before Canisius scored with :32 left.
In goal, Unger made 23 saves in the win, which raised Brockport's overall record to 5-1. They next play in the Brockport/Spencerport Christmas Tournament at SUNY Brockport December 28 and 29 with a first round game against Webster at 7 p.m. Spencerport will play Auburn in the first round at 5 p.m.
