Ranger girls beat Gates Chili
Junior forward Katie Radel hit two free throws with 1:16 left in regulation to send the game into overtime and junior guard Emily Beale calmly made five of six free throws in the last :35 of the extra session as Spencerport came from behind to defeat Gates Chili 55-51 December 12 at home.
Head Coach Don Wierzchowski lost freshman point guard Carrie Kazmierski to cramps for long periods in the second half and in the overtime period. "We lost our best player and then they lost theirs when she fouled out. We came down with some crucial rebounds late and then Emily was solid at the line at the end. She's one of the players that I'm comfortable with at the line at the end of the game."
In overtime, Gates Chili took a two-point lead before the Rangers rattled off three straight baskets by junior center Rachel Alvarez, senior Stephanie Tandy off a steal and Alvarez again following an offensive rebound before Beale put the game away.
Kazmierski finished with 20 points - 15 of them in the first half - including 3 three-pointers. Alvarez had 9 points and Beale finished 6-8 from the line for the game.
The Rangers improved to 2-1 overall and next play in the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament December 27 and 28 with a first round game against Churchville-Chili at 7 p.m.
