Otetiana Council to host international scouts
The Otetiana Council of the Boy Scouts of America has been requested to host seven international scouts from Iceland as part of their contingents to the 2001 National Scout Jamboree. The Jamboree, the first of the new century, will take place at Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County, Virginia. Registration for the Jamboree nationally has exceeded all expectations, resulting in the addition of a Sub-Camp, bringing the total to twenty.
As a result of this expansion, Scouts, leaders and staff are expected to eclipse the 40,000 mark making this the largest single-site Jamboree since 1964. Local Scouts will form contingent units staffed by local scout leaders.
The council currently plans to send five contingent troops consisting of 180 Scouts, so positions are limited. The itinerary includes travel by bus to the Washington, D.C. area and sightseeing prior to the Jamboree. Departure from Rochester is scheduled for July 19, returning on August 1.
National Jamborees are a "once in a lifetime" experience for a Scout, and occur every four years.
Participation is limited to Scouts who have completed the sixth grade or are at least 12 years of age and a First Class Scout by July 1, 2001; and who will not have reached their eighteenth birthday by September 1, 2001. Jamboree information is available at www.scouting.org.
