Blue Devils finish third in holiday tourney
After losing to Webster 4-1 in the first round of the Brockport-Spencerport Christmas Tournament, the Brockport Blue Devils rebounded with an 11-1 win over Spencerport in the consolation game December 29 at SUNY Brockport.
After a scoreless first period, the Blue Devils tallied five goals in the second period and six unanswered to pull away. Freshman Pat Young started in goal and made 16 saves, while junior Pat McCarthy and sophomore Casey Balog registered three-point games. Freshman Brandon Dries scored his first high school goal early in the third period. Senior Richard McCubbin popped in two goals while seniors Brian Abrams, Chad Hage, Nick Greene and freshman Craig Willis all had multi-point games for Brockport.
Spencerport's Joe Tremaine broke up the shutout bid in the third period with an assist from Chris Mark. Abrams was the only player named to the All-Tournament team. Blue Devil coach Scott Empey stated, "We started slow after a few days off for the holiday but we came on strong at the end. We wanted to keep pressuring the puck and we did a good job of that all game. We just couldn't get it going yesterday against Webster, but we came back today."
Both teams are in action this Wednesday, January 10 with Brockport battling Hilton at 5 p.m. while Spencerport plays Irondequoit at 7 p.m. in the second game of the doubleheader at Lakeshore.
