Churchville-Chili wins shootout
The Churchville-Chili Saints got shoot-out goals from Joe Ramirez and Joe Jackson along with stellar goaltending from freshman Dan Ramirez and defeated the Canandaigua Braves 4-3 in the first round of the 2000 Brighton Holiday Tournament December 27 at the ESL SportsCentre.
After falling behind 1-0 less than one minute into the game, Joe Ramirez scored after taking a pass from Brad Gurbacki, dashing down the wing and putting a high shot off the goaltender's shoulder and into the net to tie the game at 1-1 after two periods. Halfway through the third, Jackson was hauled down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot which he converted putting the Saints up by a goal. Canandaigua tied the game with 5:21 to play in regulation before the teams traded goals in the final minute - the Saints goal by Ryan Easton with an assist to Brian Sarubbi.
Neither team was able to score in the five minute overtime session thanks to a fantastic penalty shot stop by Dan Ramirez with less than one minute to play setting up the shoot-out.
Joe Ramirez and Jackson scored on their shots while Dan Ramirez stopped all four Braves' shots at the other end of the ice for the victory. "I was just trying to react because I've always been told to react and not try to anticipate what the shooter's going to do," said Dan Ramirez after the game. Head coach Jim Jackson said of Ramirez who finished with 33 saves, "He just played awesome tonight; he's the best goalie in the league as far as I'm concerned and I think he demonstrated that tonight."
The Saints lost in the championship game to host Brighton 5-2 the next night. They next are in action Tuesday, January 9 in a rematch with Brighton at ESL SportsCentre at 5:30 p.m.
