Brockport wins on Nichols free throw

Senior Mike Nichols made a free throw with 1.2 seconds left to break a 60-60 tie and give the Brockport Blue Devils a 61-60 win over Hilton January 3.

Hilton's Ryan Mee made one of two free throws with 29 seconds left to tie the game at 60-60. Several time-outs later, the Blue Devils had several opportunities come off the rim before Nichols found himself with an offensive rebound. "I just shot the ball hoping to get fouled and I was. After I made the first, we called a time-out and I missed the second on purpose to start the clock and run out the game," said Nichols.

The Blue Devils led by six points at the half and seven points at the end of the third quarter but Hilton's Antonio Williams made five consecutive points with 70 seconds left in the game to tie it at 58-58. The game was tied on three separate occasions in the final 1:10.

Brockport senior Chris Abram led all scorers with 28 points including five 3-pointers while Dan Carr chipped in 16 points. Williams scored 11 of his team-high 15 points for Hilton in the second half to spur the late Cadet rally. Jarrod Rapke had 12 points - all on four 3-pointers.

Brockport improved to 4-3 overall/2-1 in league action and Hilton fell to 6-4. The Blue Devils next play Penfield January 17 and Greece Athena January 19 at home while Hilton participates in the Pittsford tournament and has road games at Webster January 16 and Fairport January 18.
