Additional flu shot clinics scheduled
Not too late for shot to protect against flu
Monroe County health officials have scheduled additional flu clinics, as follows: Monday, January 22 - 3 to 7 p.m.; Monday, January 29 - 3 to 7 p.m.; and every Wednesday through February 28, noon to 7 p.m. All clinics will be held at the Monroe County Health Department, 111 Westfall Road.
Clinics are open to persons of all ages. Influenza or "flu" is a respiratory illness that is spread easily from person to person. Symptoms include rapid onset of fever, sore throat, muscle aches, chills and headache.
"Flu cases have been low so far this year, but we encourage residents to get a shot because we're beginning to see increased activity," said Deputy Health Director Dr. Nancy Bennett. "Health officials have been closely monitoring flu activity at a variety of locations including industry, schools, and nursing homes.
Health data gathered over the past 18 years indicates that the flu generally peaks between December - March. Approximately 20,000 people die from flu or its complications each year in the United States.
In the event of severe weather, residents can call 274-6189 or tune-in to local news broadcasts to learn if the clinic has been canceled or to obtain further information.
