Student aid applications first step for college-bound students
Student aid applications first step
for college-bound students

Those who plan to enter college in the fall should note that now is the time to complete the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and other applications required by the colleges.

This is the form college-bound students must complete to be considered for all federal grants, low-interest student loans and work-study; for some colleges' aid; and to start the application for a New York State Tuition Assistance Program grant. The FAFSA is available at high school guidance and college financial aid offices, or online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Several free resources are available to assist families as they apply for aid, according to the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities.

Through February 16, the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association and NYSHESC are sponsoring a College Aid Awareness Network help desk. Weekdays from 4 until 8 p.m., parents and students can call toll-free, 800-689-1669, or log on to www.nysfaaa.org for an interactive live chat.

Also, a free publication, "Affording College," describes the financial aid process and explains the major programs. For a free copy call 518-436-4781 ext. 31, or send e-mail to colleges@nycolleges.org.
