Blue Devils Icemen win two
The Brockport Blue Devils hockey team defeated Penfield and Churchville-Chili by identical 4-1 scores to take sole possession of second place as the regular season winds down.
On January 17 at SUNY Brockport, senior Brian Abrams scored a pair of goals and assisted on another and sophomore Casey Balog had a goal and an assist as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two periods. Penfield broke up the shutout bid of goaltender Nick Unger with three minutes left in the game before Colby Jones put the game away with an empty-net goal at the final buzzer. Unger made 12 saves in net.
On January 20, also at SUNY Brockport, the Saints put a bit of a scare into the Blue Devils. Following a scoreless first period, Casey Balog put Brockport on the board off a scramble in front of the net. The goal came on the team's 17th shot of the game at the 9-minute mark of the second period with assists from Craig Willis and Chad Hage. Three minutes later, Churchville-Chili's Dan Sarubbi tied the game 1-1 on the power play after taking a pass from Ryan Perry and putting a slapshot along the ice past the goaltender Unger.
The Blue Devils woke up in the third period with goals by Balog, Hage and Abrams to pull away. Saints goaltender Dan Ramirez made 32 saves in net.
Churchville-Chili travels to Batavia January 30 and Brockport battles first place Irondequoit January 31 at SUNY Brockport.
