Blue Devils sweep Penfield
The Brockport Blue Devils girls varsity volleyball team played their final home match of the regular season on Senior Day and swept Penfield 15-5, 15-5, 15-0 January 20. The game also marked the final regular season home match for 22-year coach Mary Lou Blodgett.
The closest the Chiefs would get in the match was 5-4 in the second game before Brockport rattled off five straight points to pull away. Senior Meghan Schuth had 8 kills and fellow senior Stephanie Ayres added 3 kills and 4 aces and the final four points of the third game. Juniors Mindi D'Agostino and Kristi Rath anchored the defense with seven and eight digs respectively while Kim Demmans led the team with five aces. Other seniors playing their final home match were Dawn McCrudden and Jamie Bahr.
Coach Blodgett will step down following the playoffs hoping to avenge a loss in the sectional finals one year ago to Webster. She was both a player and a coach for the Blue Devils program, which has won 9 sectional titles - the last coming in 1989 - and many Sportsmanship Awards in the 1990s along with the finals appearances in 1990 and 2000. "It's time for someone else to have a shot," said Blodgett. "The amazing part is that Linda Martin is the only other coach this program has had in its 33 years. She started it as a club team in 1967, stayed 11 seasons, and I came in as an assistant coach under her. I just hope the next coach continues the tradition here of great teams. Even though we've won a few titles, I'm probably most proud of the Sportsmanship Awards."
Brockport will host the first round of the three-round sectional playoffs February 3 with the finals at Roberts Wesleyan February 8.
