Richard Villa to talk about inclusive classrooms
Parents and teachers are invited to a presentation on effective ways to help all children achieve high standards in an inclusive classroom. Richard Villa, the author of Creating an Inclusive School, will speak at Spencerport's Cosgrove Middle School Thursday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m.
Villa's address, called Restructuring for Caring and Effective Education: The Inclusive School, is sponsored by the Spencerport School District's Office of Special Education and the Office of Staff Development. Villa will talk about the characteristics of inclusionary schools, which combine general education students with special education students in the same classroom, a New York state mandate. He will also speak about accommodations and modifications to curriculum, instruction, and assessment for students who experience mild, moderate, and severe challenges, and explore ways in which students can collaborate with adults to meet the needs of a heterogeneous student body. Villa has taught special education, written over 70 articles, and authored four books.
The registration deadline is March 1. For a registration form, call the Office of Special Education, 349-5145 or visit the district web site, www.spencerportschools.org.
