First Extra Mile
Award presented
Supervisor Austin Warner, Assistant Recreation Director Mike Rath and Captain Wright of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department presented the First Extra Mile Award at the Hamlin Town Board meeting February 12 to Matt and Mark Jock of Hamlin.
The Extra Mile Award is presented to someone who has shown an act of kindness, done a good deed or gone the extra mile. The aim of the program is to acknowledge people who have done good things that have gone unnoticed.
Matt and Mark Jock were staying "just one more night" with their grandparents, Jerry and Philis MacKenzie. Matt had been watching the pumpkins on the porch of Greg and Gay LaDue and noticed a funny glow. The boys alerted their grandparents who in turn tried to call and awaken the LaDue family. The family was awakened by the commotion and left the home, which in minutes was engulfed in flames. The boys then helped console the grief stricken family. If Matt and Mark had not been alert and stayed "just one more night," lives might have been lost.
