Barclay School

Cheryl Harness, author/illustrator of historical books for children, gave a lively talk to third-graders at the Elizabeth S. Barclay School in Brockport on February 14. To bring history to life for the children, she wore a bloomerite costume from the 1850s, which she made herself. According to Harness, a dress like hers was considered a radical political statement, promoting free-thinking back then. She talked to the students about becoming an author and answered their many questions.

Students prepared for Harness' visit by learning about the 100 women Harness writes about in her latest book, Remember the Ladies: 100 Great American Women. Students each chose one of the women and designed their own cover for a book, with illustrations of what made that woman famous. The students' artwork was displayed throughout the hallways.

Harness was in Rochester celebrating the publication of her book, which vividly recounts the inspiring stories of women from the late 16th century to modern day, with pages devoted to the New World, the American Revolution, Civil War, the Depression, the Fifties, etc. While in Brockport, Harness visited the Morgan Manning House. She also visited the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester, where she presented stories and slides on the "100 Great American Women" from her book. She also celebrated 150 years since the founding of a friendship between Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
