Lady Bees advance to final
The Byron-Bergen girl's basketball team advanced to the Class CCC title game with a 42-41 win over Perry February 26 at Fairport High School.
With Byron-Bergen leading 22-10 at half-time and 34-24 after three quarters, Perry put a full-court press on for the fourth quarter, which brought them back in the game with a 17-8 run. Leading by one point, the Bees' Ashley Horn was fouled with just five seconds left in the game. She missed the front end of the one-and-one and Perry rebounded, but failed to call time out or get a shot off before the final horn.
Senior Leigh Vainio talked of going to the final. "This is just so amazing; we were in the championship in soccer this past fall and lost, so we're glad to get another chance." It is the team's first championship final since 1987.
Senior Sarah Orzech led all scorers with 17 points to go with her 15 rebounds. Sophomores Horn and Megan Richards scored 9 and 7 points, respectively.
The Bees lost to Mynderse in the final 84-42 on March 1. Seniors Orzech, Vainio and Katie DeFelice wrapped up their high school basketball careers.
