Brockport incumbents declare candidacy
Three Brockport Village Board members, the mayor and two trustees, have declared their intention to seek re-election in the June 19 village election. Mayor Mary Ann Thorpe and trustees James Whipple and Norman Knapp will form the Citizen's Party in their re-election bid. Village elections are non-partisan.
At least four other petitions have been picked up from the clerk's office by other candidates. Potential candidates have until May 5 at 4:30 p.m. to gather 100 signatures on a nominating form.
Thorpe said it was a difficult decision for her to make to run again based on the "delicate issues that we've had to deal with lately." But she wants to focus on the "many positive things that have happened over the years and the fact that we have much more community spirit, volunteerism and activism than we had a decade ago."
Whipple had no doubts about seeking another term. He said, "We're all of strong character and we know the best way to deal with problems is head on."
Knapp said the current board has begun many projects that he would like to see through, including more cooperative efforts with the college.
