Junior drivers need to follow state rules
The Ogden Police Department has received numerous calls and questions regarding Junior Operator permit and Junior license restrictions.
New York state laws include certain requirements for drivers aged 16 to 18 years of age. These requirements also apply to out-of-state drivers under 18.
With a Junior Learner's Permit: One may drive between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. only when accompanied by a properly licensed driver age 18 or older.
From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., a person with a Junior Learner's Permit must be accompanied by a properly licensed parent or guardian, a driver education teacher or driving school instructor only.
With a Junior License (no blue card): a person may drive between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. without being accompanied. Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., the Junior License holder may drive when accompanied by a parent or guardian only.
Drivers do not need to be accompanied if they are driving to work or school, however, this is only when going directly between home and a state approved work-study program, a course at a college, university or registered (credit towards a diploma) high school evening course or a driver education course.
This does not include: extra curricular activities (sports practices or games) or social events (Junior Prom or Senior Ball, dances, etc.)
Those driving to one of the above approved courses must carry form MV58A available at the local Department of Motor Vehicle Office. This form must be completed by the employer or the driver must get a letter from the appropriate school official. The letter must list the hours, location and nature of the job or school activity, the motorist ID number and address and phone number of the employer or school official. This form must be carried in the vehicle.
Violations to these NYS requirements may result in ticketing, the vehicle may be towed and there is the possibility of a court ordered fine and loss of driving privileges.
Anyone with questions can call the Ogden Police Department at 352-2131.
