Joseph G. Nyiri was inducted into Delta Epsilon Sigma at Niagara University, the National Scholastic Honor Society for Catholic Colleges and Universities.


Jeffrey Lynch, of Brockport-Spencerport Road, Spencerport, has been named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. A fifth-year student in the College of Applied Science and Technology, Lynch is studying computer science. He is the son of Terrence and Susan Lynch and a 1997 graduate of Spencerport High School.


Jeffrey Voorheis of Spencerport, class of 2002 at Ithaca College, was inducted into the Zeta Iota Chapter of Sigma Iota Epsilon on March 30 at Recital Hall at the college. Voorheis, a 1998 graduate of Churchville-Chili, is the son of Deb and Brian Voorheis of Ogden.


Amy Cassano of Manitou Road, Hilton, a student at the State University of New York College of Technology at Delhi, was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year college students. Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is based on campus citizenship and a cumulative academic average of at least 3.5 after 15 credit hours of study.

Cassano is a veterinary science technology major.


The Holley Chapter of the National Honor Society has chosen Ellen Parry to receive this year's University of Rochester Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching. Parry teaches tenth-grade English and acting at Holley High School. She is also the faculty advisor for MasterMinds.


Sarah Penepent of Bergen has been named to the winter dean's list at Johnson & Wales University. To receive dean's list commendation, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or above. Penepent is majoring in culinary arts.


Two Spencerport residents are taking part in internships this spring through SUNY Oswego's Experience-Based Education Program.

They are (with their internship in parentheses): Diana R. Carmen of South Union Street, a senior zoology major (Scottsville Veterinary Hospital); and Abigail M. Smith of Sandstone Drive, a senior human development major (Fairgrieve Elementary School in Fulton).

The Experience-Based Education Program at Oswego places students in internships that allow them to earn college credits while garnering valuable "real life" experience.


Approximately 205 undergraduate and graduate students received degrees from SUNY Geneseo in December 2000. Among area residents receiving a degree was Lisa Marie Galante, of Spencerport, bachelor of science, Biology.


Thirty-one student pianists from the studio of Barbara Woods in Spencerport performed in the New York Federation of Music Clubs Festival in February. All students earned superior ratings and will receive national honor certificates. The students are: Kacey Pratt, Alison MacKenzie, Elaine Loggi, Nathan Wolski, Kyra Tobin, Nathaniel Heale, Melissa Heale, Ben Heale, Laura Clemm, Beth Keegan, Tessa Fox, Kristen McCannon, Vy Dinh, Korin Diedrick, Steven Burek, Kathleen Carroll, Stacey Baumler, Younghee Cho, Jilian Seifert, Brian Loggi, Meghan Shewmann, Alexandria Townsend, Sabrina Agro, Abby Blakely, Ben Blakely, Andrew Callan, Ryan Simm, Jennifer Smith, Marissa Wimer, Katherine Wimer, and Jennifer Trenton.

Gold Cup trophies for earning three years of superior rating will be awarded to Beth Keegan; for six years of superior ratings to Steven Burek, Ben Heale, Melissa Heale, and Meghan Shewmann; for nine years of superior ratings to Stacey Baumler, Kathleen Carroll and Elaine Loggi. Five students performed in the District Seven Trophy Festival and earned the Noteworthy Achievers Trophy. They are Jeanna Newcomb, Emily Liu, Tonya Burek, Youngsun Cho, and Megan Barrell.


Kawal Liverpool of Brockport was named Lakeside Health System's April Employee of the Month. He was cited for being constantly attentive to the needs of the patients and the hospital staff. It was noted that Liverpool always gives of his time to listen, shows patience and respect to all patients. Liverpool is a Certified Nurse's Assistant on the third floor.


Kyle Whigham, of Hilton, has been named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. A freshman in the College of Business, Whigham is studying finance. He is the son of Bob and Karen Whigham and a 2000 graduate of Hilton High School.


Rebecca Bessell recently joined Shepard Maxwell & Hale Insurance Agency located at 2176 Lake Road in Hamlin as a producer. The agency is a full service organization dealing in Personal, Business and Financial coverages. She has spent over 20 years in the business and has lived in the area for the past 17 years.


Marine Corps Pvt. Michael J. Kalinowski, a 2000 graduate of Spencerport High School, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. In addition to a physical conditioning program, Kalinowski spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill.


Christopher J. Jackson has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program.

Jackson graduated in 1998 from Churchville-Chili Senior High School, and received an associates degree in 2000 from Monroe Community College.

He is the son of Laurie A. and James H. Jackson of Dewey Street, Churchville.


Army Pfc. Justin C. McMillan has graduated from the machinist advanced individual training course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

He is the son of Brenda S. and Robert J. McMillan of Brown School House Road, Holley. McMillan graduated in 1998 from Holley High School and received an associates degree in 2000 from Genesee Community College.
