Brockport police investigation complete
The Monroe County Sheriffs Department has completed the investigation of allegations made against members of the Brockport Police Department. In February, Mayor Mary Ann Thorpe requested the sheriffs department conduct the investigation as Brockport does not have its own internal affairs division.
While Thorpe has received a verbal summary of the sheriffs investigation, the formal written report has not yet been delivered to the village. At the be-ginning of the process, village board members agreed that no action would be taken until the written report had been received and reviewed. Thorpe does not know when that report will be forthcoming.
From the verbal summary, Thorpe learned that no criminal charges will be filed by the Sheriffs department. Thorpe said that finding comes "as no surprise." Thorpe could not comment at this point whether any disciplinary actions would be warranted, or how much, if any of the report will become available to the public. Personnel rules may place some of the findings off limits.
Police Chief Gary Zimmer has been on administrative leave since the investigation commenced. Zimmers leave was not meant to imply that the allegations were directed against him, Village Attorney Roy Heise said in February, but as a way to ease the Sheriffs investigation. Zimmer has been a Brockport police officer for over 30 years and chief since 1993.
Editor's Note: Trustee Mort Wexler has stated that if the village has not received a written report from the Monroe County Sheriff's Department by Monday, April 16, he will make a motion to reinstate Gary Zimmer as police chief at that evening's regular village board meeting.
