Three SUNY Brockport students have received the Outstanding Adult Student Award for the spring 2001 semester. Emmanuel Tchanque, a computer science, mathematics, and computational science triple major, is originally from Cameroon. He has a 3.62 GPA and has been on the SUNY Brockport dean's list. He has served as a tutor for the Student Support Services Program in a variety of math courses, and on the Advisory Board.
Debbie Wojtowicz, an accounting major, has a 3.48 GPA. She served as president for the SEAS swim team, secretary for the McDonald's swim league, troop leader for the Girl Scouts, and she is a member of the Accounting Society on campus. Wojtowicz is also a member of Sigma Beta Delta, a national honor society in business management and administration. Other honors include being named to the SUNY Brockport dean's list and recognized as Volunteer of the Year for the Brockport division of the Girl Scouts.
John Cassin, a political science major, has a 3.89 GPA. Cassin has served as a volunteer for the Democratic party, a CPR instructor for the Red Cross, medic/EMT for Gates Ambulance, medic/EMT for Spencerport Ambulance, and as a volunteer firefighter for the Henrietta Fire Department. He is a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha and Alpha Chi national honor societies, and received the Rochester Safety Council Distinguished Service Award in 1999. Other honors include Outstanding Political Science Student award and City of Rochester Team award three times.
The Monroe County Chapter of the Catholic War Veterans honored George Goodwin of Chili as Catholic War Veteran of the Year 2000 at their convention dinner March 31. Goodwin, a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help CWV Post 1156, is also a member of Chili Memorial Post 412, VFW, and Chili American Legion Post 1830.
Catholic War Veterans County Commander James B. Duignan presented Goodwin with a plaque.
Joe Lissow has been an active member of the Hilton Fire Department since 1989. He spent the four years before that as a Fire Department Explorer where he held the positions of Lieutenant and Chief. In 1991, Joe became an Emergency Medical Technician and has been qualified as a medic with the department ever since. He is also qualified as an Interior Firefighter and can operate every fire truck and ambulance that Hilton owns.
Since he joined the department, Lissow has taken numerous training classes to become a better firefighter, including classes on rope rescue and water rescue. He was also a trustee for the department from 1993-1997, a part-time dispatcher from 1992-1998 and a member of the Monroe County Hazmat Team from 1995-1996. Joe is a full time Fire System Technician for Rochester Fire Equipment.
Lissow lives in the Village of Hilton and says his family's involvement in the department was what got him to join. He also knew it would bring him personal satisfaction. He says he continues to volunteer because he enjoys helping his community.
Assistant Chief Mark Kalen says that Joe's dedication to the department and his willingness to keep learning make him a valuable asset to the community.
Brockport High School teacher, Jim Keefer, has been selected as one of six educators to receive this year's Clarkson University Award for Inspirational High School Teaching. The selections are made from nominations submitted by members of the senior class of Clarkson. Keefer has been invited to the Clarkson campus for Commencement Weekend and will be honored for his dedication to his students.
James DeFelice, of Peachey Road, Bergen, has been named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology.
A fifth-year student in the College of Applied Science and Technology, DeFelice is studying software engineering. He is the son of Catherine and Paul DeFelice and a 1996 graduate of Byron-Bergen High School.
SUNY College at Brockport Professor of Communication Floyd Anderson was chosen from a number of exceptional nominees to receive the 2001 Eastern Communication Association Donald H. Ecroyd and Caroline Drummond Ecroyd Teaching Excellence Award.
The Ecroyd Award is presented annually to recognize excellence in teaching. Candidates must be engaged in a full-time teaching position at any level of education, have been a member of the ECA for five continuous years, and demonstrate a record of employing communication principles as the foundation for applying sound teaching practices.
A group of Anderson's former students, both graduate and undergraduate, nominated him for the award. Supporting letters were written by his current students and professional colleagues at other colleges and universities in the northeast.
Anderson currently serves as the graduate coordinator of the Department of Communication, and is teaching "Speakers, Campaigns and Movements" and "Seminar in Rhetorical Criticism." He has taught at the college since 1971 and is a resident of the Village of Brockport.
Terrence (Terry) M. Hooper has been named director of human resources at SUNY Brockport effective April 30, 2001, according to Edward Kumar, vice president for administrative services.
Hooper comes to SUNY Brockport from the City of Elmira, NY, where he was its director of personnel for the last four years. Previous to that position, he was manager of employment and benefits for the City of Rochester for six years and manager of benefits and personnel systems for nine, also for the city.
Lakeside Beikirch Care Center Nursing Supervisor Val Smith, R.N. recently received the LBCC Quality Recognition Award. It was noted that Smith excelled in her commitment, action, respect, excellence and service to patients and co-workers.
Patrick Hastings has earned the Top Salesperson of the Month Award for March at Ogden/Chili Nothnagle, according to Manager Rob Reimer. An Associate Broker, Hastings has been with the company for more than 22 years and has received numerous awards which include Salesmaster Gold 1998 and 2000, (60 or more closed transactions in a 12-month period), Top 25 1998 in a company of nearly 500 agents. He has been Top Office Producer for 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
Hastings served as manager of one of Nothnagle's local offices for five years and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Rochester Association of Realtors. He is a Notary Public.

Jason V. Brackley, a 2000 graduate of Hilton High School, joined the Marine Corps on August 1, 2000. After three months of boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, Brackley graduated with the rank of Private First Class and earned expert marksman. Presently stationed at 29 Palms, California, Brackley was promoted to Lance Corporal on April 5. He is the son of Valeria R. Brackley.
Richard N. Greenblatt has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program. Greenblatt, a year 2000 graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School, will soon report for basic training. He is the son of Denise M. Greenblatt of LeRoy and David E. Greenblatt of Churchville.
