7th Annual Statewide Decision Making Day May 7

The Genesee County Office for the Aging and the New York State Bar Association will be co-hosting the 7th Annual Statewide Decision Making Day. This year's event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center, 2 Bank Street, Batavia.

David Dickinson Kaiser, Esq., from Legal Services for the Elderly, will give a free presentation to explain legal procedures and discuss the documents available to assist people making health care and financial decisions when they are unable to do so. Topics to be covered include: the purpose of a Power of Attorney and Health Care Proxy; how to choose an agent for the Power of Attorney or Health Care Proxy; the difficult kinds of Power of Attorney and when they become effective; what insurance, pension, and financial documents should be maintained; and why a will is important.

Jeffrey Loftus, Public Education Specialist, for Upstate New York Transplant Services, Inc. (UNYTS), will discuss the procedures for organ and tissue donations. Mr. Loftus, a heart transplant recipient since 1994, will provide education and first hand knowledge to his audience about organ donation.

The program is open to the public, especially senior citizens and their caregivers.
