Churchville firefighters launch fundraiser
for high-tech camera

The Churchville Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. is trying to raise money to buy a MSA Evolution 4000 Thermal Imaging Camera. This piece of high-tech equipment can help firefighters save lives and limit property damage.

"During a fire, smoke is often the greatest enemy of firefighters," Fire Chief Greg Harmer said. "It can become so thick that we cannot see even a few feet in front of us. Firefighters put themselves at risk by entering a building 'blind' to search for victims they cannot see, feel or sometimes, even hear."

"This is an investment in the safety of the entire community," said Churchville Lions Club President Bill Keidel. "The Churchville Lions Club has decided to support the Churchville Fire Department in their purchase of a MSA Thermal imaging camera by pledging $10,000. We are also challenging the businesses located in the community, served by the Churchville Fire Department, to support this effort and match our pledge to fund the full purchase price of the MSA Evolution 4000 TIC."

Chief Harmer said firefighters without a TIC are trained to keep one hand along a wall while sweeping the floor with the other hand. The TIC will make rescuers' jobs easier. Firefighters will also use the camera to determine the origin and path of a fire by sensing heat through walls, beneath floors, and above false ceilings. Pinpointing the hot area quickly can help minimize property damage.

The TIC is also used in hazardous material spills or mass casualty incidents to obtain an initial analysis of the situation before firefighters' lives are placed in unnecessary danger.
