Jenna Simonetti, a sixth-grade student at Terry Taylor Elementary School in Spencerport (front row center in photo), was honored at the 23rd Annual WHAM Sportswomen of the Year Awards luncheon on April 30. A check in the amount of $1,000 was presented in her name to the Children's Hospital at Strong for the hospital's Pediatric Pulmonary Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. Jenna has cystic fibrosis. She was also presented with numerous gifts from supporters of the luncheon, signifying her involvement with a host of sporting activities. Also in the photo are (back row, left to right) Felicia Zimmerman, member of the U.S. Olympic foil fencing team that placed fourth at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney; Diann Roffe-Steinrotter, 1994 Olympic Gold Medalist in alpine skiing; Kathy Whitworth, past winner of the Wegman's Rochester International and member of the LPGA Hall of Fame and featured speaker at the luncheon; Kim Batten, 1996 Olympic Silver Medalist, world record holder in the 400 meter hurdles track and field event; Cathy Turner, Olympic short-track speedskating gold medalist and local resident; (front row, left to right) Arlene Stevens, member of U.S. Olympic fencing team in Sydney; Jenna Simonetti; and Ann Marsh, member of U.S. Olympic foil fencing team in Sydney. Missing from photo is Iris Zimmerman, member of the U.S. Olympic foil fencing team in Sydney. Batten and the four members of the Olympic fencing team were honored as co-winners of the WHAM at-large Sportswoman of the Year. Also honored at the luncheon were Sarah Elnicky, of Aquinas Institute, as High School Sportswoman of the Year and Christa Downey, of Nazareth College, as College Sportswoman of the Year.
