Spencerport students read
472,515 minutes for 'Reading Books Brigade'
Spencerport elementary school students read a total of 472,515 minutes as part of a joint effort between the school district and the Rochester Brigade football team to promote reading. During the month of April, students in fourth, fifth- and sixth-grades took on a reading challenge. They kept track of how many minutes they read at home each night, with parents verifying the amounts. Winning students received tickets to a Brigade game.
Kim Burkwit and Leslie Stein's fifth-grade inclusion class from Munn Elementary School won the district-wide class competition, reading 46,738 minutes. Each student in that class read every night during April, making it a true team effort. The entire class will receive free tickets to the May 18 Brigade game. Burkwit and Stein added an extra incentive for their students, promising to dye their hair green for a day if their class won the competition.
In addition to the district-wide competition, there was also a competition for the boys and girls at each building. Sixth-graders Joshua Miller and Alissa Ricker were the top readers at Munn Elementary School, Hetal Patel and Andrew Alcott were the top readers at Taylor Elementary School, while Jason To and Karalyn Kelly were the top readers at Bernabi Elementary School. They will join Burkwit and Stein's class on May 18 at the game.
In addition to receiving the tickets, the winning students will be recognized at half-time. All Spencerport students who participated in the reading challenge will have an opportunity to meet and receive autographs from the Brigade players after the game.
