Holley jumpers raise over $11,000
for American Heart Association
The Annual Jump Rope for Heart has become a tradition at Holley Elementary School. In its 16th year, the event has raised over $140,000 for the American Heart Association's research and programs. This year, 175 jumpers raised $11,437 by gathering pledges, then jumping rope in teams of six. Sixty-six parent and 28 staff volunteers helped out during the event and provided plenty of beverages and snacks to the active jumpers.
The top three students who earned the most pledges were: Amber Callen Ward ($361), Brittney Lawrence ($315) and Houston Draper ($310). The top team, which raised $769, was from Barbara Filardo's class. Team members were Aaron Ashbery, Jonathan Dickinson, Houston Draper, Brent Kimbler, Brittany Knapp and Amanda Montgomery. The top class was Marge Burgio's fifth-grade class, which gathered $1,142 in pledges. Physical education teacher Lisa Campbell has coordinated the event in Holley every year and says that it not only involves the whole school in a worthwhile cause, but gives teachers the opportunity to teach students about the importance of community service, and the necessity of physical fitness and nutrition.
