Indians ruin Ranger hopes
The Irondequoit Indians needed a win over Spencerport to clinch the Division II softball crown. A Ranger win would mean a share of the title, but the Indians came away with a 6-5, May 17.
Trailing 4-0 when the Indians used two infield errors and a double steal to help generate the lead in the top of the third, Spencerport rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, junior Kristina Schweikert drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run, setting up senior Melissa Sullivan's three-run triple.
In the top of the fifth, the Indians again manufactured two runs on two walks, a stolen base, an error and a single to take a 6-4 lead. In the last inning, the Rangers Meghan Weinpress stroked a two-strike triple to right field and scored when the ball got loose in the infield, bringing the Rangers to within one run. Sophomore Nicole Ricciuto reached on an error and was sacrificed to second as the tying run, but was left stranded.
The Rangers entered sectional playoff play as the third seed in Class A.
