The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley, Inc. honored local girls with Silver Awards, the highest honor a Cadette Girl Scout (ages 11-14, grades 6-9) can earn. The Silver Award recognition ceremony was held on May 12 at the Rochester Marriott Thruway.

Silver Award recipients from Troop 870 in Spencerport are: Jessica Diehl, Spencerport High School, spearheaded the Read to Lead Program; Kimberly Musson, Grade 8, Ada Cosgrove Middle School, helping the Battered Women's Shelter; Robin Musson, Grade 8, Ada Cosgrove Middle School, Hymnal Book Marks; Sarah McLaughlin and Sondra Wood, Grade 9 at E.J. Wilson High School, worked together on Flag Ceremonies for the Service Unit; Jennifer Wilterdink and Tara Zarpentine, Grade 9 at Spencerport High School, did a Baby Clothes Collection project.

To earn the Silver Award, girls apply their personal strengths to helping others. Working with an adviser, the girls build leadership skills, explore career possibilities and serve a community need. The project involves creating a project plan, timeline and budget; identifying people to help; and successfully executing the plan.
