Rangers upset by Brighton in second round
Spencerport senior Melissa Sullivan flied out for the final out of the game and immediately dropped to her knees along the first base line. It was symbolic as the third-seeded Rangers were brought to their knees in a 3-0 sectional playoff upset by 11th-ranked Brighton May 24.
The Rangers managed just two hits in the game and failed to get any of the last 11 batters of the game on base. In the bottom of the third inning, pitcher Meghan Gollaher led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and took third on a fielder's choice before being stranded. The only other hit was an infield single by senior Melissa Scroger in the fourth. Brighton scored a single run in the fourth inning and added their final two runs in the fifth.
"This team has shown they can come back from big deficits, but we just couldn't get the sticks going today," said head coach Deb Milner after the game. "They have had a positive attitude throughout the season and been a great group to work with, but it just wasn't our day."
Seniors completing their high school careers include Sullivan, Scroger, Stephanie Recco and Regina SanFilipo.
