Nathan M. Waldron, son of Dennis and Suzanne Waldron of Spencerport, has been named to the spring 2001 dean's list at St. John Fisher College. Waldron, a Hilton High School graduate, is a junior majoring in business management.


Amy Lynn Vaughan, of Bergen, was inducted into the Tau Chapter of Pi Theta Epsilon at the University of Buffalo.


Matthew Kadrie, son of Kevin Kadrie of Spencerport, has been named to the fall 2000 and spring 2001 dean's list at St. John Fisher College. A sophomore, Kadrie is a computer science major. He is a 1999 graduate of Spencerport High School.


Jennifer Lynn Earley, daughter of Bob and Judy Earley of Chili, was graduated cum laude from St. John Fisher College on May 12. A dean's list student all four years, she earned double majors in communication/ journalism and Spanish. She received the Foreign Language Award, and became a member of Who's Who of American College Students. She is currently working for Prevention Partners Youth Network in Rochester as a program specialist.


Kevin B. Miller, the son of Paul and Sharon Miller of Spencerport was named to the fall 2000 and the spring 2001 dean's list at St. John Fisher College. Miller, a junior, is a business major.


Devan Bissonette of Spencerport has received a master's degree in telecommunications from Michigan State University.


Michael R. Goodwin has received a bachelor of science degree with distinction in chemical engineering from Clarkson University. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Goodwin of Hilton.


Kristin J. Pugh has received a bachelor of science degree with distinction in electrical engineering from Clarkson University. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pugh of Morton.


Kristen Clark of Hilton was named to the 2001 ECAC Upstate All-Star softball team. Clark, a two-time All-SUNYAC recipient, received second team honors with her stellar performance inside the circle for Brockport. The right hander finished the season with a school-record 19 wins (19-9), giving her 29 in her two-year career. Clark also broke the Golden Eagles single-season records for ERA (0.87), games (33), innings pitched (200.1), fewest runs/IP (.125), strikeouts (188), and strikeouts/IP (.939). On March 14, in Florida, Clark struck out 14 batters to break the single-game school record of 11, which was set in 1998.


Quality Recognition Awards were presented to Deb Rogers and Lorene Versluis, employees of the Lakeside Beikirch Care Center. They work as Certified Nursing Assistants on the fourth floor of the Care Center. Rogers, of LeRoy, and Versluis, of Hamlin, were honored for the "going the extra mile" during a time when the Care Center was short-handed. Rogers and Versluis received a certificate of recognition and gifts in honor of their dedication to providing quality care to the residents.


Erin D. Pemberton, of Spencerport, recently received a Law Faculty Award from the University of Buffalo Law School. The awards are presented to graduating seniors who have made outstanding contributions to the Law School community.


The following is a list of students attending Utica College who have been named to the dean's honor list for achieving a 3.4 or better in their coursework during the spring 2001 semester: Erin Hinrichs of Hamlin; Vanessa Tinkous of Holley; Christina Brighton of North Chili; and Blake Leibeck of Spencerport.


Brandon G. Smith, son of James Smith of Rochester, has received an Ashland Inc. Foundation Scholarship. Smith is a graduate of Aquinas Institute.


Karen Burr, RN, has received the "Long Term Care Employee of Distinction" Award given by the New York Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. Burr was nominated by a Lakeside Beikirch co-worker for "rewriting the standard of long term care education and quality improvement at Lakeside Beikirch Care Center." Burr wears two hats at Lakeside - Long Term Care Coordinator and Performance Improvement Coordinator. In addition to staff orientation and continuing education, Burr also tracks care audits and presents the findings to continually ensure that the residents are receiving the best care possible.


Thirty-one graduating Nursing Students were recently honored at GCC's capping and pinning ceremony. Nursing program graduates include: Elizabeth Christ, Holley; Christine Powell, Hamlin; Kim Sadwick, Holley; Diane Stettner, Brockport; Erin Stiles, Brockport; Robin Viera, Holley; Amy Wielgosz, Spencerport; and Nancy Wolf, Holley.

The Award for Clinical Nursing Proficiency, presented to a graduating nurse who excels in patient care, was awarded to Nancy Wolf.

Recognized for membership in Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for junior and community college students, were Kim Sadwick, Holley; and Nancy Wolf, Holley. First year students who belong to PTK include Delia Bove of Holley and Shana Flow, Brockport.


More than 800 four- and two-year degree candidates received diplomas from Alfred State College this spring. The following students from the Westside News' readership area were among the students receiving degrees in the Class of 2001: Patrick Eichas of Hilton; Jeffrey Lawler of Hilton; Derek Polaikis of North Chili; Christopher Preston of Brockport; Kevin Rademacher of Brockport; Frederick Shelley of Spencerport; Jeremy Smith of Spencerport; and Christopher Weckesser of Spencerport.


Bowling Green State University awarded degrees to 2,000 students during spring commencement exercises on May 11 and 12 in Anderson Arena. Graduates from this area included: Christine L. Warner of Brockport and Mandy Reis of Hamlin.


Suzanne Brendze, M.D. has joined the Hilton Health Care, P.C. She received a bachelor of arts degree in comparative literature from Brown University in 1988 and completed a Post Baccalaureate in the Premedical Program at Wellesley College in 1991. She then attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and was awarded her medical degree in 1997. Dr. Brendze completed her Family Practice residency in 2000 at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Dr. Brendze is a member of the American Academy of Family Practice. She has received certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics and the Neonatal Resuscitation Program. She is particularly interested in women's health issues and will include obstetrics in her practice.


Esther Fiege was honored at the Faith in Action Celebration held on June 5 at the Mapledale Party House. Fiege was nominated as an Honoree by the First Baptist Church in Chili through the Board of Deacons for her commitment of 20 years to the Fairport Baptist Home. The event was sponsored by the Greater Rochester Community of Churches. Fiege resides on Whittier Road, Ogden, with her husband, Al.


Jean Benedetto has joined the staff of Towne and Country Eyecare in Spencerport. Benedetto is a graduate of the Ophthalmic Dispensing Program at Erie Community College where she was trained in all aspects of eyeglass lens design, fabrication and fitting of contact lenses. She is a past officer and active member of the Rochester, New York State Society of Opticians, and currently serves as an examiner for the NY State Board of Examinations given to prospective opticians. She resides in Webster with her husband, Gerald, and their two children.


Roberts Wesleyan College has announced that the following students were named to the dean's list for their outstanding academic performance last semester: from Spencerport - Kerry Brenner, Lissa Mariano, Kelly Radel and Aaron Tesavis; from Rochester - Deborah Brumbaugh, Steven Christenson, Danielle Franca, Julie Kazmierski, Shanthi Kelley, Sara Meldrim, and Kari Simmons; from Bergen - Kristyn Heeks; and from Brockport - Beth Lievense.


Named to the spring 2001 dean's list at Alfred State were the following students: from Brockport - Charles Ekiert and Kevin Rademacher; from Hilton - Brian Grinnell; and from North Chili - Derek Polaikis.


Patrick Reynell, of Spencerport, has been named to the spring 2001 dean's list at Barton College, Wilson, North Carolina.


Katie Fortner, daughter of Maureen and Paul Fortner of Brockport, has been named to the spring dean's list at Indiana University with a 3.94 GPA.


Sean McEntee, son of Karen Sterlace of Hilton and James McEntee of Rochester, was ordained as a priest of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate Saturday, June 23 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton's Church in Hamlin. Bishop Michael D. Pfiefer, OMI, of the Diocese of San Angelo, Texas, ordained Deacon McEntee, who is a 1987 graduate of Hilton High School and a 2001 graduate of the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. Deacon McEntee celebrated his first mass as a priest at St. Bridget's Church in Rochester on Sunday, June 24. Karen Sterlace is an art teacher at Hilton High School.


The New York Lottery has officially recognized 113 graduating high school seniors from the Rochester area to earn a four-year $4,000 Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship (LOT) funded by the New York Lottery. The Scholarship is paid out in $1,000 increments over four years and may be used to cover the cost of attendance at any New York state-accredited college, university, trade school or community college. Local winners are: Chealyn Tim of Brockport, Trisha S. Kilbourn of Churchville, Karen M. Schranz of Gates Chili, Kim C. Cipura of Hilton, Timothy C. Smallidge of Spencerport, Tiffany M. Swanger of Holley, and Melissa A. McDonald of Kendall.
