Learn About Letchworth series to be presented
The Arts Council for Wyoming County has received a mini-grant from the New York Council for the Humanities, made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities, to produce this year's Learn About Letchworth series, Canal Crossings: The Erie Meets the Genesee Valley. The Learn About Letchworth series will take place at the Lower Falls Restaurant, Letchworth State Park, each Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in July and August, beginning July 10 and is free to all.
The Arts Council has been presenting the Learn About Letchworth series, in partnership with the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation at Letchworth State Park, since the early 80's. Scheduled presentations are as follows:
July 10 - The History of the Construction and Engineering of the Genesee Valley Canal presented by David Kipp, author of Locking the Heights, the Rise and Demise of the Genesee Valley Canal.
July 17 - Erie Canal Legacy: Architectural Treasures of the Empire State presented by authors Richard O. Reisem and photographer Andy Olenick.
July 24 - The Erie and the GVC: Their Impact and Geology by Tom Grasso, President of the Canal Society of New York.
July 31 - The Art of the Erie Canal presented by Virginia Bartos of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society.
August 7 - Canal Songs with Jim Kimball, SUNY Geneseo music department.
August 14 - The Transitional Years: From GVC to the Railroad Era by Bill Reddy, lecturer and railroad history buff.
August 21 - Surly Sal McMurray, Erie Canal Cook, an entertaining informative characterization by Gretchen Sepik.
August 28 - The Genesee Valley Greenway presented by Fran Gotcsik, Executive Director, Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway.
