Brockport Mayor Mary Ann Thorpe has appointed eight members to a committee that will help review applications in the search for a new police chief. The chief’s position will be advertised once the wording of the job description has been approved by civil service.

Appointed were trustees Peter DeToy and Mort Wexler; residents Manuela Swanger and Lisa Saeva; clergyman Peter Enyan-Bouadu of the Nativity Church; Dr. Richard Lumb of SUNY Brockport’s criminal justice department; merchant Sharon Wentworth; police officer and Stetson Club president Adam Mesiti; and police officer Mark Phillippy.

The committee will assume an advisory role; the village board retains the power to hire a new chief. When establishing the committee, Thorpe said she wanted to include a broad representation of the community in the search. The two citizen representatives were chosen from a large field of applicants. Saeva is the mother of young children, a nurse at Lakeside Memorial Hospital and active school volunteer. Swanger is a Spanish translator for community organizations and has also been active on the Brockport Ecumenical Outreach Committee.

The village board would like to have a new police chief in place this fall.
