Walk the Agri-Mile at the Orleans County 4-H Fair
Grab a map and join the treasure hunt for agri-facts as you journey across the Orleans County 4-H Fairgrounds. Along the way children and adults alike will find friendly animals to pet, demonstrations to watch and a myriad of hands-on activities.
Participants in the Agri-Mile Contest are asked to find the answers to a set of questions probing the past, present and future of agriculture, with the overall theme of "Agriculture for the New Millennium." How do growers use satellites in space to help them plant their crops here in Western New York? Did you know that manure can produce energy in the form of electricity? What are the components of sustainable agriculture? What is biosecurity? How can one farmer milk more than 50 cows at one time? (Hint: the floor moves).
Volunteers will be available along the Agri-Mile route to answer questions or offer in-depth explanations. Participation is free, appropriate for readers (or pre-readers accompanied by an adult) and a prize is offered at the end of the course. Directions to the starting point will be clearly marked at Fair time.
Fair dates are July 23 to 28. The Fair is located on Route 31, in Knowlesville. Free admission, $4 parking.
