Hamlin Library celebrates first anniversary
The Hamlin Public Library will celebrate the first anniversary of its opening, on Tuesday, July 10 at 7 p.m. The library is located at 422 Hamlin-Clarkson Townline Road. The celebration will include a short program and refreshments.
Nancy Martin, president of the Hamlin Public Library's Board of Trustees, is excited and encouraged by the library's showing of steady growth. Circulation figures show that the Hamlin Public Library had loaned 20,000 items in its first year. In comparisons with other libraries within the Monroe County Library System, Hamlin has exceeded the circulation figures of several other more established small libraries. This trend may continue to grow as the Hamlin Library has seen an increase in circulation of 500 more items per month in its last six months.
Upon opening, the library was contained in an 875 square foot store front and its shelves held approximately 7,000 items. Earlier this year, the library was almost doubled in size. The addition includes an expanded circulation area, office space, processing areas, and a separate children's room. The collection's greatest growth also occurred in the children's area. This reflects the town's demographics, according to Martin, as nearly one third of the population of the Town of Hamlin consists of children under the age of 18.
In an effort to meet the needs of the community, a children's reading program is set to kick off on July 11. The library hopes to offer a series of community history programs in conjunction with the town's upcoming sesquicentennial and additional special interest programs are being planned as well.
"The library's first anniversary is an exciting milestone that we are very thankful and thrilled to share with the community," Martin said.
