Collamer-Jones Karate team wins 37 trophies

The Collamer-Jones (Gillam Grant) Karate Team won 37 trophies at the Isshinryu World Karate Championships held on June 23 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The team won praises from Okinawan Grand Master Kichiro Shimabuku for its efforts, which included 12 first, 15 second and 10 third places. The Collamer-Jones competition team was coached by Sensei Tammy Genagon.

In weapons kata, first place trophies were won by Nicholas Adams, Alana Armstrong, Rob Jacob and Valerie Kuykendall. Dan Adams, Russell Adams, Alyssa Armstrong, Laura Armstrong, Vincent Lanzalaco, Jamie Suter and Jeremy Walker won second place trophies. Third places went to Amy Kohler and Cynthia Smith.

In empty hand kata, the first place trophy winners were Nicholas Adams, Alana Armstrong, Phil Fiacco, Rob Jacob, Michael Sananikone and Micah Sanders. Second places went to Dan Adams, Alyssa Armstrong, Vincent Lanzalaco, Jamie Suter and Jeremy Walker. Third place trophies went to Alexa Armstrong, Amy Kohler and Dylan Bates.

In fighting, first place finishers were Amy Kohler and Jamie Suter. Second places went to Nicholas Adams, Alyssa Armstrong and Cynthia Smith. Third places went to Russell Adams, Alexa Armstrong, Dean Bates, Rob Jacob and Ann Kohler.

All are students in karate programs under Shihan Cyndy Jones. The team will next appear as part of the Collamer-Jones Martial Arts Demo at Byron Heritage Days on July 28. For information call 548-2801.
