Hear the best barbershop at the beach
Barbershop on the Beach, as it has been fondly referred to for 11 years, takes place on Sunday, July 22 from 1 to 8 p.m. at Ontario Beach Park, Rochester. This concert is free and open to the public.
Three not-for-profit vocal music groups, Harmony, Inc., The Society for Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA), and Sweet Adelines International will present seven hours of continuous Barbershop. Talented male and female singers from across New York will charm with old-time favorites and pleasantly surprise audiences with new Barbershop arrangements of contemporary music.
Barbershop music is a truly American art form, originating here in the early 1900s. Characterized by unaccompanied four-part harmony (lead, tenor, bass and baritone), classic numbers include sweetly sentimental or amusing lyrics. Quartets and choruses pride themselves on their carefully choreographed dance moves and the occasional humorous use of props such as hats or canes, making live performance very entertaining.
Lawn chairs are recommended to enjoy this rain or shine concert. Refreshments will be available; or bring a picnic. For information call (716) 671-6557 or (716) 254-1542. Barbershop on the Beach is part of the Concerts by the Shore Series made possible by Wegmans, the City of Rochester, Ontario Beach Park Program Committee and Monroe County.
