California here they come
Some area 4 sixth graders were viewing the Ansel Adams photography exhibit at the George Eastman House as one of their preparations for their "People to People Student Ambassadors" trip to Yosemite National Park in July. These students are part of a group of 47 students from the Buffalo/Rochester area who will join a group of 10 from Cincinnati, Ohio.
These students were nominated last year by a teacher, counselor, administrator or former student ambassador. Before being accepted, each student completed a questionnaire and provided three letters of recommendation. Once students were accepted they prepared for their trip by attending orientation meetings once a month and studying about the areas they will visit.
The students will be staying at the Yosemite Institute for a week of sight-seeing and learning about the environment, geology, plants, animals and Native Americans of that area. The second week will be spent at the Headlands Institute for Marine Biology in San Francisco where they will explore tide pools, visit a Redwood forest and learn about the ecology of the west coast. They will also have a chance to tour San Francisco, Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Among students participating are:
from Spencerport - Shannon Bittner and Jeff Freier;
from Hilton - Alex Klafehn;
from Brockport - David Orszagh, Erika Berrocal;
from Churchville - Joshua Hunt;
from North Chili - Patrick Smith.
