Tourney raises program funds
Spencerport High School's second Chipping in for Career Connections golf tournament raised $2,039 for the district's School-to-Career program. The money raised, $600 more than last year, will be used for career scholarships and for the high school's career day event, planned for March 2002.
The tournament took place at Salmon Creek Country Club July 30. There were 64 golfers. A team sponsored by IBM Global Services - Bob Hengenius, Don Adams, Andy McKay and Brent Scorzelli - won the men's division for the second year in a row. The women's division winning team consisted of Deb Milner, Linda Pringle, Theresa Malagisi, and Kristina Malagisi. Milner and Pringle were on the winning women's team last year. The Spencerport School District team, with John Pelin, Todd Yunker, Nancy Foster-Milgate and Bonnie Frank, won the mixed division.
The tournament also included a "longest drive" contest, won by Jeff Farnsworth and Jennifer Zoller. Frank Nowak and Deb Milner won the "closest to the pin" contest and Dan Azzarone won the putting contest. Realtor Joyce Lobene donated an additional $133 to the Spencerport School-to Career Advisory Council.
The 35 tournament sponsors included Advantage Federal Credit Union, Chase Pitkin - Brockport, Energy Wise, IBM Global Services, Lamont Trophies, Nothnagle Realtors, Tops Markets and Wegmans. Thanks to generous company donations, each golfer received a door prize. In addition, each golfer received a Kodak single-use camera, a Frontier calling card and a golf tool kit from the School-to-Career Advisory Council. The tournament was organized by the high school's student government with the School-to-Career Advisory Council, which supports the Spencerport School District's efforts to implement the Career and Occupational Readiness Education (CORE) initiative and the state-mandated Career Development and Occupational Studies learning standards.
